Estaca de Bares Route

This route allows the traveler to get to know the surroundings of Estaca de Bares, and to discover its attractions and history.

The Estaca de Bares route begins at the northernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. Cape Estaca de Bares is the northernmost lighthouse of Spain, and as attractions, the area offers visitors, villages, estuaries, uses and Galician customs.

Start of route in Estaca de Bares

From the lighthouse of Estaca de Bares that rises up to more than one hundred meters high, it is possible to enjoy a start of the route with spectacular maritime views.

This lighthouse presides over the site of Ventureiro, a mound that forms the well-known -and very named- Punta de la Estaca de Bares.

Estaca de Bares is geographically located 400 kilometers further north than New York. These waters do not freeze because the Gulf Stream flows through them, warm waters that prevent the waters of Estaca de Bares from turning to ice.

The islet of Estaquín de Sigüelos is not inhabited and belongs to the Cape of Estaca de Bares, in the town of Mañón, Galicia, Galician land of cliffs and strong winds.

The winds most feared by sailors are the winds known as Nordés Pardo.

Ruins and mills on the Estaca de Bares route

Next to the ruins of the American Base Station there is a path that goes down the cliff and reaches the water mills of Bares.

The set of mills of Estaca de Bares are located on the cliff slope of the Punta de Bares. The mills symbolize the feat of the human being, who took advantage of the natural resources for his survival.

Lorán American Base

The American base of Estaca de Bares has been purchased by the Concello de Mañón. The purpose is to give it a tourist use due to its privileged location; next to the Punta de la Estaca de Bares.

Viewpoint of Coitelo

The cliffs of Loiba converge between the Sierra de la Faladoira and the Atlantic, the Ría de Ortigueira, the port of Espasante and the Cape of Estaca de Bares.

One of the best panoramic views from this viewpoint is the most beautiful bank in the world, meaning the best views.

Sandbanks and dunes of Loiba

Loiba is home to a series of sandbanks such as: riberia grande, ribeira do carro, o picón, gaivoteira and coitelo. These narrow systems remain hidden when the high tide arrives and to reach them it will be necessary to go down the winding path that descends to the sea.

Beaches of Estaca de Bares

The beaches of Estaca de Bares and Mañón beaches are located in A Coruña. The beach of Bares shows a curious and beautiful half-shell shape. Its fine white sand and the pine forest that surrounds it make the magic overflowing its four latitudes.

To reach the Barqueiro Metal Bridge, also called «A Vella Ponte» is to discover an old iron bridge that crosses the river Sor. The bridge has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
