Iron bridge of O Barqueiro
The metal bridge of Barqueiro, also called «A Vella Ponte» is an old iron bridge that crosses the river Sor. The bridge has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
Where is the bridge
The bridge is located between two more modern viaducts. The road from Ferrol to Vicedo passes over one of them and the Ferrol to Oviedo railroad line passes over the other.
O Barqueiro Trampoline
With a long history, the metal bridge of O Barqueiro is now an exclusively pedestrian footbridge.
Due to its privileged location and height, there are young people who jump into the water from the bridge itself. This is the area of Chamadoiro beach and Punta Furada.
History of the bridge
The metal bridge of O Barqueiro was built in 1901 in order to communicate Viveiro with Ortigueira, since until then the inhabitants of both shores had to cross in boats.
The engineer Adolfo Pequeño designed it in 1880. Eleven years later, in 1891, Eugenio Van de Eyde began its construction. Three years later a reform of the foundations on the riverbed had to be carried out by José Real.
During the 80’s, the passage of vehicles was prohibited, which generated a significant deterioration in the bridge. Later the passage of motorcycles, pedestrians and bicycles was allowed, which only accentuated its degradation. Finally it was closed and for years rust invaded it.
Characteristics
The metallic structure of the bridge of O Barqueiro has three arches of about 50 meters.
Rehabilitation
In 2006 it was rehabilitated. Since then it has been used only by pedestrians.
